Giving Up Caffeine

I decided just to quit cold turkey.  Obviously, I didn’t think that it would be a problem. But I second guessed myself by stashing a Dr. Pepper in my car as an emergency.  I didn’t have any problem getting going in my day.  I was amazingly pleasant under the circumstances.  And I ate a healthy breakfast and lunch to fuel my body.  Nothing heavy.  Things were going pretty well.

As they day wore on, I had trouble remembering things, finding things and focusing in general.  By 4 pm my head was roaring with a headache.  And yes, I went to the car and got the DP.  So my addiction is clear and real.  Cold turkey isn’t going to work for me.  Let the weening begin!

I share this story because I think that we all have days where we need a little boost to get going.  I also think that we don’t like to admit that we have certain addictions or unhealthy habits.  I love sugar.  And I know that everything they say about it means that it is killing me.  So my empathy for smokers should be higher.  Food makes me happy.  And I am prone to use food to manage my emotions.  Another unhealthy habit.

I hope that you, like me, will take those steps to have a much healthier lifestyle.  A scripture that I memorized as a child is a good mantra for this work “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Phil 4:13  Admitting that I need help is part of the battle.  Asking God to give me strength is a good thing.  Saying a prayer when I want to indulge will help me curb my cravings.  Going to Holy Yoga at Faith tonight will center me and help me breathe deeply.

Hopeful,
